Juvenile committed for possessing stolen firearm and stealing a vehicle

Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on August 16, 2024, a juvenile, age 14 of Clovis, was committed to the Children, Youth, and Families Department for the term of one year for the offences of Unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and receiving a stolen firearm.

On April 12, 2024, Officers from the Clovis Police Department were dispatched to a residence for theft of a vehicle and a firearm.  The owner of the vehicle ended up finding the vehicle later that day.  After a thorough investigation, speaking with residents and reviewing surveillance footage, the officers were led to the juvenile’s house where he was found with a stolen firearm in his waste band.  The juvenile admitted to doing several “licks” in Clovis and Portales where items were stolen.  Licks are known as breaking into vehicles and other properties. 

The Honorable Drew D. Tatum presided over the hearing and committed the child to the custody of CYFD for 1 year. 

The case was prosecuted by Brett Carter, Special Prosecutor and the child was represented by criminal Defense Attorney, Sandy Gallagher of Portales.
