Clovis, NM—Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced that on April 3, 2025, Christopher Vega was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Corrections for being a Felon in possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property. The Honorable Drew D. Tatum presided over the hearing and found Vega to be a habitual offender.
The incident stems from July 5, 2024, at approximately 10:33 p.m., Clovis Police officers conducting a patrol near 8th and Prince Street initiated a traffic stop on a white-and-black motorcycle traveling without a license plate. The motorcycle matched the description of one that had previously fled from law enforcement.
Detectives and patrol units successfully stopped the vehicle near 10th and Lea. Upon contact, officers observed signs of motorcycle theft, including a damaged ignition manipulated with a screwdriver.
The driver, identified as Christopher Vega, was found to have an active parole violation warrant out of Texas, along with additional confirmed warrants from Portales. A search of his belongings revealed a stolen Springfield XDM .45 caliber handgun with multiple loaded magazines. The firearm had been reported stolen from Roosevelt County. Vega, a convicted felon since 2014, was prohibited from possessing firearms.
Further investigation showed Vega operated the motorcycle with a suspended license and without registration or insurance.
This case highlights the critical role our officers play in taking dangerous individuals off the streets,”said Quentin Ray. “Quick coordination and decisive action by our patrol and detective units helped remove a stolen firearm from a convicted felon and prevent potential harm to our community.”
