On July 15, 2024, a Clovis Police Officer observed a black sedan driving recklessly near Grand and Gama Streets. The vehicle failed to use turn signals, sped through residential alleys, and disregarded traffic signs.
The Officer attempted a traffic stop when the vehicle pulled into a driveway at 102 Beta Street. The driver, later identified as Stephen Taylor Dubay, exited and then re-entered the vehicle despite verbal commands to stop. The suspect accelerated toward the officer, prompting the deputy to evade the oncoming vehicle and initiate pursuit.
The vehicle continued to flee at high speeds, driving erratically and in the wrong lane through city and county roads, eventually heading southbound toward Portales via US 467. Additional units joined the pursuit as the suspect posed increasing danger to public safety.
The pursuit concluded in Portales. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was in possession of an AR-style rifle within the vehicle.
The case was prosecuted by the Special Prosecutor, Brett Carter and Dubay was represented by criminal defense attorney Angelina Baca of Clovis.
