YAZZIE SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR BATTERY ON A POLICE OFFICER

Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on July 3, 2024, Cheryl Yazzie, age 31, of Clovis, was sentenced to 1 ½ years in the Department of Corrections for Battery on a peace officer.

On May 12, 2023, Officers with the Clovis Police Department placed Ms. Yazzie under arrest for concealing identity and placed her in the back seat of a patrol car.  Yazzie began kicking the windows, so a Clovis Police Officer opened the door to the car and told her to stop kicking the windows.  Ms. Yazzie then kicked the officer in the head while in the back seat of the patrol unit.  

The Honorable Judge Fred Van Soelen presided over the hearing and sentenced Yazzie to 1 ½ years in the Department of Corrections which includes a habitual enhancement.  

The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutor, Brett Carter, and Yazzie was represented by criminal defense attorney, Kaitlyn Cochran of Clovis.
